Good dental health has been long identified as a key factor in an individual’s overall health. It affects overall well-being and enables people to participate in their chosen roles without discomfort or embarrassment. Research demonstrates that there is a link between periodontal (gum) disease and other systemic conditions in the body for e.g. diabetes and heart disease.

General Dental Services

  Dental check-ups and hygiene
Having regular six monthly check-ups enable dental conditions to be identified early and effectively treated. Early detection leads to minimal procedures and lower cost.
  Gum disease
Gum disease is caused by plaque and tartar build-up on teeth. Signs of gum disease include the following (A) Red, swollen or tender gums or other pain or sensitivity in your mouth (B) Bleeding gums while brushing, flossing, or eating hard food (C) Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth (D) Bad breath.
  Fillings
Tooth decay is caused by bacteria which convert sugars to acids. This leads to demineralisation and destruction of the hard tooth structure which create holes in teeth. Typical signs are sensitivity or pain to hot, cold and sweet foods. The decay is first removed and the tooth prepared for filling. The most common filling material is composite resin which is mercury free and colour matched to the existing tooth. This is virtually undetectable and blends seamlessly with the shape of the existing tooth structure restoring the damage. Another option is Silver Amalgam which is a conventional metal alloy filling that provides a cost-effective and stable solution. If you’re unsure about which filling option to select ask your dentist for a recommendation.
 Crowns

A crown is a custom made restoration that fits over the entire tooth. It protects and holds the tooth together. Crowns are usually done when a tooth is poorly shaped, fractured, chipped, badly decayed, discoloured or after root canal therapy. They are typically bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Crowns are often used to improve the strength or appearance of teeth. Types of crowns are all ceramic, porcelain fused to metal or gold. Discuss with your dentist at Moonee Valley Dental for a recommendation.

  Bridge
A bridge is a fixed dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth or several teeth. This is achieved by bonding or cementing a combination of crowns and artificial teeth permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants. Types of bridges are: all ceramic, porcelain fused to metal or gold. Discuss with your dentist at Moonee Valley Dental for a recommendation.
  Wisdom tooth removal
Wisdom teeth are the last molars which normally push through between ages 17 to 25. Sometimes wisdom teeth can cause problems like pain, swelling, infection or crowding and may need to be removed. At Moonee Valley Dental we can assess your wisdom teeth related issues and decide on an appropriate solution. Most wisdom teeth can be removed at our surgery. Complicated cases are normally referred to a specialist.
  Dentures
For patients with missing teeth where implants or bridges are not the treatment of choice dentures offer a cost effective solution. Dentures can be complete or partial and are removable. Partial dentures are for patients who are missing some of their teeth on a particular arch. Complete dentures are worn by patients who are missing all of the teeth on a single arch. Implant supported dentures – implants are sometimes used to stabilise dentures. This is becoming increasingly popular due to its effectiveness and long term results.

Cosmetic Dentistry

 Smile Makeovers

A smile make over can transform and significantly enhance the appearance of your smile. A smile make over is the process of improving ones smile through one or more cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening, veneers, white fillings, crowns or bridges. At Moonee Valley Dental we will discuss what you want your smile to look like as well as the things you currently don’t like about your smile. Generally, in a few short visits a smile makeover will restore chipped, cracked or discoloured teeth and restore your bite. Smile makeovers are customised according to your unique considerations.

  Teeth whitening

You can change your silver amalgam filling with a natural looking alternative. For small fillings tooth coloured composite resins are normally used. Larger fillings are best replaced with colour matched porcelain inlays, onlays or crowns. Porcelain or ceramic restorations offer superior aesthetics and strength.

  Amalgam (Mercury) filling replacement

You can change your silver amalgam filling with a natural looking alternative. For small fillings tooth coloured composite resins are normally used. Larger fillings are best replaced with colour matched porcelain inlays, onlays or crowns. Porcelain or ceramic restorations offer superior aesthetics and strength.

  Veneers

A veneer is a thin layer of material usually placed over the front teeth, either to improve aesthetics or to protect the tooth surface from damage. There are two main types of materials used to fabricate a veneer, composite and dental porcelain. For porcelain veneers a thin layer of the enamel is sometimes removed from the tooth. A mould is made and sent to our local dental lab where the colour matched veneer is fabricated. The veneer is then bonded to the tooth using special bonding agents.

Specialised services

  Teeth grinding solutions (bruxism)

Bruxism is involuntary clenching or grinding of teeth especially during sleep. This can lead to achy jaw or teeth and chipped or cracked teeth. At Moonee Valley Dental this condition can be diagnosed and managed appropriately. Often an occlusal splint or night guard is made to be used by the patient.

Dental implants

  Dental implants
Dental implants are normally used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bio-compatible dental implant is placed in the jaw bone and allowed to heal. A crown in then placed on top of the implant to replace the missing tooth.
